In January 2017 I co-wrote the introductory article and co-coordinated a special journal issue on the topic of “Historia y concepto de América Latina” (History and the Concept of Latin America) for the Mexican journal ISTOR: Revista de historia internacional (ISTOR: Journal of International History). When I served as the President of the Conference on Latin American History’s Teaching and Teaching Materials Committee (2013-2015), which met concurrently with the American Historical Association, I organized pedagogical roundtables about various topics surrounding Latin American History. From those experiences, a colleague, Amelia Kiddle from the University of Calgary, and I decided it would be helpful to publish research-based on those pedagogical discussions. For this special issue, we wrote the introductory article entitled, "Historia de América Latina" that analyzed the ever-changing intellectual and geographic boundaries of the term “Latin America” and how we can explore the meaning of this term with our undergraduate students. We also selected five scholarly articles, originally published in English, that we thought should be translated for this issue because they would help readers more fully understand the historical origins of the term “Latin America.” The co-author and I are very proud of this contribution to the field because it bridges scholarly and pedagogical discussions, and makes English-language scholarship available to teachers and researchers throughout Latin America.
